New concept battery

Today's rapidly developing science and technology have greatly improved our daily lives and travel capabilities. Printed batteries are one of them. Experts at Enfucell in Vantaa, Finland, have become one of the pioneers in this field with their flexible paper battery, SoftBattery.

Dr. Zhang Xiacang (Enfucell's Chief Technology Officer) and his team invented the printed paper battery in the early 2000s.

As the name suggests, a printed battery is a new type of battery manufactured by screen printing. It is as thin as paper and is also called a "paper battery". This battery is light, thin and soft, so Enfucell named it SoftBattery. This flexible battery contains multiple printed layers that are stacked in a specific order (as shown in Figure 1 on the right).

Printed batteries have several different types of chemical compositions, such as zinc/manganese dioxide, zinc/air, zinc/silver oxide, lithium/manganese dioxide, and lithium-ion batteries. Among all these battery types, the simplest and most well-known is the zinc-manganese dioxide battery. The negative electrode is mainly a mixture of zinc and carbon, and the positive electrode is a mixture of manganese dioxide, carbon, and electrolyte. The electrolyte is usually a weakly acidic substance, such as ZnCl2, Zn(NH4)2 (zinc ammonium), etc.

Enfucell's SoftBattery is based on this chemical type: Zn+ 2MnO2 + H2O→ZnO + 2MnO(OH)

The chemical components and materials contained in the flexible battery are lead-free, cadmium-free, and mercury-free, making it an environmentally friendly battery.

Fully flexible

Unlike traditional batteries, SoftBattery is very flexible in shape, thickness, and size, and it can be customized according to customer requirements. The thickness of the flexible printed battery can be adjusted by controlling the thickness of the printed layers and selecting the sealing substrate/material. The typical thickness of this battery is 0.4 to 1.0 mm. The flexible battery can be attached to curved surfaces with a bending radius as small as 25 mm.

In the first few years after its launch, the flexible battery won numerous awards, but this did not bring much commercial value to Enfucell. The product was a completely new concept for the market, and there were no specific applications at that time. In the following years, Enfucell has devoted itself to developing applications for flexible paper batteries and has achieved great success.

Enfucell has developed the following application products for flexible batteries:

Smart temperature label

Enfucell's smart temperature label integrates RFID, smart temperature sensor, and printed paper battery technology. It is the thinnest paper temperature recorder and is suitable for cold chain logistics management of temperature-sensitive products (such as medicines, perishable foods, and flowers). It can accurately record the temperature data of products during transportation and storage. Today, every individual who cares about the quality of temperature-sensitive products, including manufacturers, distributors, logistics providers, governments, and even consumers, can participate in cold chain logistics management through Enfucell's smart temperature label's simple reading and tracking system. Data can be read locally via mobile phone (or special reader) or uploaded to the cloud for analysis and recovery. The Enfucell smart temperature label integrated with a flexible paper battery makes logistics more reliable.

Enfucell provides the following (on the right)

Three types of smart temperature labels.

The specifications of the labels are shown in Table 1.

Iontophoresis face mask

The Enfucell iontophoresis face mask consists of a conductive face mask cloth and a pair of 1.5V iontophoresis face mask stickers (paper cell stickers). The paper battery provides power for microiontophoresis. Microiontophoresis is a method of introducing soluble salt ions into human tissues using direct current to achieve therapeutic purposes (Singh and Maibach, 1994). This technology can effectively enhance the penetration of cosmetic ions through tissue barriers (such as skin). When using the Enfucell iontophoresis face mask, the negative electrode of the battery is attached to the essence-soaked face mask cloth, while the positive electrode is directly attached to the clean skin behind the earlobe. The two electrodes form a complete current loop through the skin, promoting the realization of microcurrent iontophoresis. The moisture in the cosmetics is introduced into the skin through the active electrode (Jiangsu Enfucell Flexible Electronics, 2018), and any active aqueous solution (ionic or non-ionic aqueous solution) can be introduced into the skin along with the moisture.

Compared with conventional face masks, face masks integrated with paper batteries are more effective. Because the printed flexible battery is light, thin, and flexible, the iontophoresis face mask is easier to use than bulky and non-disposable traditional iontophoresis devices. The Enfucell iontophoresis face mask makes beauty care more effective and convenient.

All iontophoresis mask products shown in Figure 4 are developed by Enfucell for customers. These mask products can be of any shape, but their main principle is the same: The current generated by the battery will promote the absorption of active ingredients.

TempSense wearable body temperature patch

TempSense is a flexible smart thermometer. It is an electronic device powered by a paper battery that can accurately measure body temperature. The TempSense wearable body temperature patch includes two NTC temperature sensors, an integrated circuit board, and a 3.0V flexible battery. The integrated circuit board contains a microprocessor with low-power Bluetooth (BLE) radio transmission capabilities, which can wirelessly transmit continuous body temperature measurements to a mobile phone application.

TempSense technical specifications:

• Soft thermometer, light, thin and comfortable to wear

• Supports continuous temperature measurement for up to 48 hours

• Dimensions: 40mm x 100mm x 2.2mm

• Applicable location: Underarm

• Measurement range: 25~45°C

• Response time: ≤5 minutes to reach temperature equilibrium

• Accuracy: ±0.05°C~±0.1°C

• Communication method: Bluetooth 4.0

• Working distance: 6 meters

•Operating time: ≥24h standard mode; ≥48h intelligent mode

TempSense wearable body temperature patch

Many parents may encounter such troublesome experiences when taking care of sick and feverish infants and young children, especially at night, in order to measure the child's body temperature, parents must wake up from sleep many times. However, by using a flexible battery-powered TempSense body temperature patch things become much simpler. It continuously records body temperature and sends an alert to the mobile phone when the temperature exceeds the limit, so it can greatly alleviate parents' anxiety and uneasiness.

The TempSense temperature patch is in the medical care field

An application example of using flexible batteries. Currently, it is a major trend to use new electronic skin devices powered by flexible batteries to stably and reliably monitor health data such as heart rate, respiration, and even muscle movement.
