The Shanghai International Symposium on Printed Electronics Technology was held on October 26, 2012, in the second meeting room of the school administration building on the Xuhui campus of East China University of Science and Technology. The symposium was initiated by Dr. Zhang Xiacang, an alumnus and honorary professor of the university, one of the top ten influential Chinese in the world in 2006, and winner of the World Economic Forum's 2007 Technology Pioneer Award. It was one of a series of events celebrating the 60th anniversary of the founding of East China University of Science and Technology. Vice President Ma Yulu delivered a speech on behalf of the university, and Professor Cui Zheng, vice secretary-general of the National Innovation Alliance for Printed Electronics Industry Technology, delivered a speech on behalf of the alliance. The symposium invited eight experts to give wonderful reports: Professor Cui Zheng, researcher at the Suzhou Institute of Nano-tech & Nano-bionics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and expert under the Thousand Talents Program; Professor Kopola Harri, Vice President of VTT, Finland; Dr. Neil Chilton, Chief Technology Officer of a British printed electronics technology company; Professor Guo Xiaojun, specially appointed professor of Shanghai "Oriental Scholars", doctoral supervisor of Shanghai Jiao Tong University; Dr. Yang Zhihao, vice president of Zhejiang Guangda Electronic Technology Co., Ltd.; Dr. Zhang Zhijuan, Chinese Academy of Sciences; Professor Li Luhai, doctoral supervisor of Beijing Institute of Printing; and Professor Qian Jun, doctoral supervisor of Wuhan University. More than 30 experts, scholars, and friends from the business community from across the country attended the meeting.
The printed electronics industry, comprised of various printed electronic products, is a newly emerging industry rapidly developing globally. Printed electronic products are electronic products, differing only in that all or some of their components (such as resistors, capacitors, transistors, power supplies, displays, and memory) are produced using printing methods. The printed electronics industry is a key growth area for global industrial and economic development over the next 10 to 20 years. In 2011, the global market value of the printed electronics industry was only US$2.4 billion, mainly from applications such as e-books and some electronic video labels. However, the market value of the printed electronics industry in 2021 will reach over US$100 billion, reaching the same order of magnitude as the current US$300 billion global market value of the silicon-based microelectronics industry.
