Abstract: He is a Chinese scientist who won the 2006 "Influential Chinese in the World" award. His invention of ultra-thin paper batteries can be used as power sources for cosmetics, smart cards, musical greeting cards, paper LEDs, e-paper, sensors, and radio frequency identification tags (RFID, also known as electronic tags). His vision led him to return from Finland and establish Kunshan Enfucell Printed Electronics Co., Ltd. He believes that China will be the world's largest base for printable electronics. Please see the interview with Dr. Zhang Xiacang, founder and chairman of the company, by RFID World Net reporter!

RFID World Net: Dr. Zhang, hello! At the first Sino-foreign High-tech Enterprise Innovation Forum held in early November, you gave a speech titled "The World of Printed Electronics and Paper Batteries," once again discussing the application of paper batteries in the RFID tag field. First, please talk about the current application status of paper batteries in this field.

Dr. Zhang: First of all, from 2009 to the present, the thin-film paper batteries we have independently developed have been produced in two factories we established in China, one in Ningbo and one in Kunshan (currently located in Changzhou). After more than three years of development, the performance and other indicators of our paper batteries have improved, and we have achieved a smooth transition from semi-automatic to fully automatic paper battery production. In terms of RFID tag projects, we are currently cooperating with some domestic and foreign manufacturers that design and produce active, semi-active, and semi-passive RFID tags, helping them design and provide optimal power integration solutions to help them win more users. After verification by multiple products, the effect of paper battery and RFID tag integration is quite outstanding in some application aspects, and has been affirmed by end users.

RFID World Net: You have the reputation of "Father of Paper Batteries." In your opinion, what user needs have been mainly addressed by the invention of paper batteries?

Dr. Zhang: The emergence of paper batteries has first changed people's understanding of battery properties, letting people know that paper batteries can also be more environmentally friendly. From a macro perspective, the emergence of paper batteries has also played a certain role in environmental improvement. As users, they all hope that products can be smaller, thinner, and more flexible while meeting functional needs. These requirements are exactly what our thin-film printed paper batteries possess. As an important component of the printed electronics industry, paper batteries have played a very important role in bringing printed electronic products to the market.

RFID World Net: What are the characteristics of RFID users' demand for paper battery products? Compared with other battery methods, how will its competitive advantages be highlighted?

Dr. Zhang: Through communication and discussion with many RFID manufacturers around the world, we have learned that: 1) The most frequently mentioned aspect is the thickness of the tag; 2) Whether the shape of the paper power source can match the product design; 3) Performance parameters of the paper battery, such as peak current, voltage, and lifespan; 4) Integration of the paper battery and RFID; 5) Whether there are any safety concerns about the paper battery.

Compared with traditional power supply methods, in the application field of tags, the working method is a prerequisite for choosing a power source. For example, the thickness of our paper battery is about 0.6mm, and the shape and size can be customized as needed. In addition, the environmental friendliness and easy integration with RFID tags make it superior to traditional batteries in ultra-thin or small flexible tags. With the rapid development of the printed electronics industry in China, the price advantage of paper batteries is particularly prominent, and the applicable fields will greatly increase.

RFID World Net: In addition to the current applications such as RFID, what other potential applications does the paper battery have in the broader Internet of Things market?

Dr. Zhang: In fact, the application range of our paper batteries is quite wide, such as labels, sensors, smart cards, smart packaging, medical electronic patches, and cosmetics, etc. We welcome people from all industries to learn about our paper battery products.

RFID World Net: As one of the few companies in the world that has mastered paper battery technology, Enfucell chose the Chinese market and established a company. What were the reasons for this choice? What is your biggest experience after entering the Chinese market?

Dr. Zhang: There are two main reasons for choosing to establish a company in China: First, because China is my motherland, as a Chinese, I have an obligation to contribute my modest efforts to China's technological and innovative path; second, China has a huge and vibrant market, which is more conducive to the success of the industry and the realization of contributions to human society.

After entering the Chinese market, the biggest experience is that China has a huge and vibrant market, but entrepreneurship is also very difficult. The superficial acceptance of innovation in high-tech products by Chinese entrepreneurs and the market has increased the difficulty of bringing innovative technological products to market.

RFID World Net: Finally, please envision the future development direction of "Enfucell," whose core product is the paper battery!

Dr. Zhang: The company's development direction will be to use paper batteries as the core to promote the development of its application products, especially in the RFID field. At the same time, we will introduce advanced international printed electronics technology, establish a base with industrial chain functions, build China's "Silicon Valley" of printed electronics industry, and have established a national printed electronics technology innovation alliance with some peers to contribute to the development of printed electronics in China and the world.
